Do you have balance in your life?
The ancient Japanese philosophy of "Ikigai," which dates back to 794 AD, is more relevant today than ever in the corporate world.
While there isn't a direct translation for "Ikigai," it represents a harmonious blend of work and life, and is often illustrated as a Venn diagram with four intersecting elements: what you love, what you excel at, what the world needs, and what you can earn a living from.
The term "Ikigai" itself is derived from two Japanese words: "iki," meaning life, and "gai," which signifies value or worth. However, it’s important to note that it doesn’t strictly refer to financial value; rather, it emphasizes the intrinsic value of life itself.
With this perspective, it might be more effective to create three lists instead of four: your core values, activities you enjoy, and your strengths. The intersection of these lists represents your ikigai.
For instance, many elders find fulfillment in sharing their wisdom. While this may not have a monetary reward, it provides a profound sense of purpose. This principle can also be applied in professional settings. Effective leaders often share their extensive knowledge, accumulated over many years, to ensure that valuable skills are passed down, preserving craftsmanship in specialized fields.
Research indicates that organizations that adopt the ikigai philosophy can enhance employee loyalty and boost investor confidence. By encouraging employees to engage in activities they excel at and helping them recognize the positive impact of their work on others, ikigai creates a win-win situation for everyone in the workplace.
Leaders who actively empower and connect with their teams, making sure everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired, tend to see higher employee engagement, lower turnover rates, and significant increases in productivity.
It's evident that acknowledging individual skills and motivations brings substantial advantages to an organization, and even more crucially, it contributes to the mental and physical well-being of the team that drives it. At ADIS AUTOMOTIVE GROUP we're strong advocates and practitioners of this philosophy (and it shows).
